I'll be honest with you.
Some days, this work is exhausting.
Not because I doubt what we're fighting for. I don't, not for a second. But the mess is so big, and the calendar is so packed, and there are mornings when I read the news before I've had my coffee and think: will the crises ever end?
I imagine you know the feeling.
So today, instead of telling you about a deadline or a villain or a vote, I want to tell you about the things that are actually keeping me going this summer, in the hopes they might help you as well.
A constituent stopped me at a farmers' market last week. She'd been fighting with a federal agency over a benefits issue for months, and my office helped her get it resolved. She pulled me aside to express her gratitude. It reminded me of what drew me into public service in the first place. Helping my neighbors is what it's all about.
Young people are showing up. I've been doing town halls across IL-06 and online, and I keep noticing the same thing: more young people in the room than I've ever seen. They're not disengaged. They're furious, and they're channeling it into something. The kids are all right.
Good data. I'm a scientist. When the news gets heavy, I look for hope in the numbers. And I am not disappointed. Trump's approval ratings are near record lows, especially among independents. We only need three seats to win back the House, and our campaigns in key districts are strong. Even the planet's sending good signals: deforestation in the Amazon just hit a 10-year low. Proof that when people fight for something, the trend lines can bend the right way.
You. I've been doing this job for eight years, and the emails I get back from people like you — the ones who push back, who ask hard questions, who share something happening in their own lives — stick with me. You keep me grounded, and keep my eyes on the prize.
The dog days are real. The exhaustion is real. But so is everything we're fighting for, and so is the progress we're making.
If you're feeling the weight of it too, I just want you to know that’s good. It means you care about the future of your community and your country.
If you're with me, I'd love to hear from you. And if you can chip in to help us defend purple districts and flip red ones in November, that helps too. Let’s take back the majority and get to work. [[link removed]]
