Welcome to Monday, August 31, electorate...

Wisconsin's governor is telling Trump his planned Kenosha visit "will only hinder our healing."

Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers (D) is asking President Donald Trump to back out of a planned Tuesday visit to Kenosha, saying in a letter that Trump’s presence “will only hinder our healing.”

Protests erupted in Kenosha after a Black man, Jacob Blake, was shot in the back seven times ([link removed]) by a white police officer and left paralyzed. During demonstrations two days later, two protesters were fatally shot.

“I, along with other community leaders who have reached out, are concerned about what your presence will mean for Kenosha and our state,” Evers wrote in the two-page letter to Trump.

“I am concerned your presence will only delay our work to overcome division and move forward together."

On Friday, Trump said he was “looking into [Blake's shooting] very strongly," adding:

“I’ll be getting reports, and I’ll certainly let you know pretty soon. But, it was not a good sight. I didn’t like the sight of it, certainly. And, I think most people would agree with that.”

During his Thursday address to the Republican National Convention, Trump warned that a victory by his Democratic rival, former Vice President Joe Biden, could unleash “violent anarchists, agitators and criminals.”

** Contempt Proceedings Against Mike Pompeo?
------------------------------------------------------------

House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Eliot Engel (D-NY) on Friday announced that his committee will start working on a resolution holding Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in contempt for failing to comply with subpoenas, saying:

“From Mr. Pompeo’s refusal to cooperate with the impeachment inquiry to his willingness to bolster a Senate Republican-led smear against the President’s political rivals to his speech to the RNC which defied his own guidance and possibly the law, he has demonstrated alarming disregard for the laws and rules governing his own conduct and for the tools the constitution provides to prevent government corruption."

Pompeo addressed the Republican National Convention from Jerusalem, Israel, on Wednesday via a videotaped speech that praised President Trump’s foreign policy, the relocation of the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, and recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital ([link removed]) . The State Dept. and Pompeo have insisted that he delivered the speech without using agency resources and in a personal capacity.

The U.S. economy added 1.8 million jobs in July and the unemployment rate dropped from 11.1% to 10.2% ([link removed]) , bringing the total number of jobs recovered during the three month period which began in May to 9.3 million jobs of the 22.2 million jobs lost due to coronavirus lockdowns imposed in March and April.

From June to July, the unemployment rate declined in 30 states, remained essentially unchanged in 11 states, and increased in nine states. Unemployment rates remain high relative to 2019 ([link removed]) when the U.S. unemployment rate was as low as 3.5% ([link removed]) ― the lowest level of unemployment in 50 years ― with unemployment rates higher in July than a year ago in all states and the District of Columbia.
