House members just left Washington for their August recess with just over 3 months remaining before Election Day. As they scatter across the country to defend their records, they need to understand exactly where voters stand.
New reporting from The Washington Post shows how badly Republicans’ sales pitch for the Big Brutal Bill has failed. Only 19% of Americans say the law caused them to pay less in taxes.1
The law delivered much clearer results for the people at the top. The highest-income 20% of households are receiving 70% of its tax cuts this year, while the richest 1% are positioned to collect $1 trillion over the next decade. Those giveaways came alongside massive cuts that threaten healthcare coverage for 17 million people and nutrition assistance for more than 3 million.2
Voters are demanding the opposite set of priorities. More than 70% believe billionaires should pay more in taxes, including over two-thirds of independents and a majority of Republicans.3,4 Another national poll found that 67% of voters believe wealthy individuals pay too little in federal taxes, including nearly half of Trump voters.
Congress may be leaving Washington, but the public is not letting lawmakers off the hook as the election enters its final stretch. We need the resources to take this message into every district we can reach: tax the rich, lower costs for working people, and stop gutting critical services to finance giveaways at the top.

Those who opposed the Big Brutal Bill should reject any attempt to compete with fiscal conservatives in a race to the bottom over who can promise more tax cuts.

Use that revenue to lower healthcare, housing, childcare, prescription drug, education, and energy costs. Protect Medicaid and food assistance. Invest in working families instead of handing another tax break to people with more wealth than they could spend in a thousand lifetimes.
