Wisconsin has always been a manufacturing powerhouse, and as America celebrates its 250th anniversary, our workers and businesses continue to shape the next chapter of our nation's success. In a new joint op-ed with Congressman Scott Fitzgerald, I reflected on the Freedom Plane's visit to EAA AirVenture Oshkosh and what it represents - not only our nation's founding ideals, but the ingenuity and craftsmanship of Wisconsin manufacturers that help keep America strong.

From aerospace and defense to family-owned machine shops and small businesses, Wisconsin manufacturers produce the parts and products that power our economy, strengthen our national security, and support good-paying jobs across our state. That's why I was proud to support the Working Families Tax Cut, which provides manufacturers with the certainty to invest, grow, and create more opportunities for Wisconsin workers. The law also lets workers keep more of what they earn by delivering meaningful tax relief, including no taxes on overtime pay.

The Freedom Plane serves as a powerful reminder that the freedoms secured nearly 250 years ago are sustained today by hardworking Americans who continue to build, innovate, and manufacture right here in Wisconsin. With the right policies in place, our state will remain a leader in American manufacturing and help forge a stronger, more prosperous future for generations to come.

This week, I voted to pass the Fiscal Year 2027 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), legislation that strengthens our military, supports our servicemembers, and rebuilds America’s defense industrial base with $1.15 trillion .

For too long, our nation’s defense capabilities have faced underinvestment while our adversaries continue to expand their own. This bill helps restore America’s Arsenal of Freedom by increasing production capacity, strengthening our supply chains, and supporting thousands of skilled American jobs.

The NDAA also delivers a 5% to 7% pay raise for our servicemembers and improves support for military families through better housing, childcare, and education resources. At the same time, it cuts nearly $30 billion in wasteful programs and strengthens efforts to prevent fraud.

A strong national defense requires a strong commitment to the men and women who serve our country. This legislation ensures our military has the resources, technology, and support needed to keep America safe and uphold peace through strength.

Wisconsin families have once again been impacted by dangerous wildfire smoke drifting south from Canada, creating hazardous air quality conditions across our state. In recent weeks, several Wisconsin communities experienced some of the worst air quality levels in the world, with AQI readings reaching hazardous levels and posing serious concerns for children, seniors, and those with respiratory conditions.

I joined my Wisconsin colleagues in urging Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin to use the tools available under the U.S.-Canada Air Quality Agreement to address the ongoing impact of Canadian wildfire smoke and ensure our neighbors to the north are taking responsible steps to prevent future incidents.

Wisconsinites should not have to breathe unhealthy air because of preventable failures in wildfire management. We must work with our partners in Canada to promote responsible forest management practices and protect the health and safety of families throughout Wisconsin and the Great Lakes region.

I will continue fighting to hold leaders accountable and ensure Wisconsin families have clean, safe air to breathe.
