Donald Trump cannot be trusted. That is a sad thing to have to say about an American president, but it is true.

Trump spent years downplaying the importance of diplomacy. He made reckless and senseless calls that led us to a point of weakness: we now need to bend a knee just to get us back to the deal he purposefully abandoned.

The problem is, now that we need something, Iran does not trust him. And our allies do not trust him either. The world watched him tear up an agreement, start a war, and then pretend the damage was a strategy.

That is how American credibility gets destroyed.

I served in Iraq, a war my opponent voted for, because Washington failed to ask hard questions before a disastrous conflict. I know what happens when politicians confuse ego with strength.

American service members pay the price.
