Let’s talk about why this government decided to uproot the U.S. Forest Service headquarters from Washington, D.C., and relocate it to Utah.

The politicians pushing this are blanketing the airwaves with a convenient talking point: this is just about "bringing leadership closer to where the work happens."

But that’s false.

We know exactly what the strategy is here because we watched them run the exact same playbook in 2020. When the Bureau of Land Management headquarters was scattered out West, almost 90% of the employees ordered to relocate chose to resign rather than uproot their families.

It stripped the agency of decades of institutional knowledge and effectively crippled it—which was precisely the point.

The newest attack on the Forest Service goes even further. By moving headquarters, they are shuttering dozens of critical research centers and closing regional offices right before what is predicted to be a horrific wildfire season.

Severing the Forest Service from the seat of power in Washington is a deliberate move to blindfold and bankrupt the agency.

Over the last year, roughly a quarter of the Forest Service's 30,000 employees were already coerced or forced out. Now, thousands more are being handed relocation orders. If the BLM history is any guide, the Forest Service will soon be left with roughly half of its former ranks.

As a result of this purge, campgrounds will close, trails will crumble, high fuel loads near communities will go unaddressed—making wildfires infinitely harder to fight. And when things inevitably start going wrong on the ground, the politicians who manufactured this crisis will throw up their hands, declare the federal government incompetent, and demand these public lands be sold off to private industry.

And just in case there was any doubt about their end game, look at where they are moving the agency: Utah. They chose the home turf of Senator Mike Lee—the loudest architect of the public land selloff—and a state that is actively suing the federal government to take over millions of acres of your public lands.

It is a bleak picture, but here is the good news: the inevitable does not need to happen.

Because they are being so blatant about this corporate land grab, they are handing us the ammunition we need to stop them. The only thing that can prevent our forests from being mismanaged to the point of a fire sale is the organized, overwhelming outrage of the American people.
