Democrats,
Today, something historic happened. The Rules and Bylaws Committee of the Democratic National Committee voted to recommend moving New Mexico up as the FOURTH state to hold its primary in the 2028 presidential election!
The Democratic Party of New Mexico is thrilled by today’s recommendation from the DNC’s Rules and Bylaws Committee. We believe that New Mexico deserves to be a player on the national political stage and our voters deserve to have their voices heard. The days of New Mexico being an afterthought in Democratic presidential primaries are over!
Not only has New Mexico been a stalwart of Democratic electoral victories, we’ve been the blueprint for implementing the policies that define our party’s values. Although months ago, many would have counted New Mexico out, Democrats from across the state pulled together to make our case and help us convince the Rules and Bylaws Committee. From our party volunteers and caucuses, state legislative leaders, our federal congressional delegation, the All Pueblo Council of Governors, and of course, Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, this was truly a team effort from a broad coalition.
The Committee’s early state recommendations are:
January 22nd: South Carolina
February 1st: Nevada
New Hampshire: February 8th
New Mexico: February 15th
Michigan: February 22nd
Virginia: February 29
Rules and Bylaw Committee members enthusiastically expressed support for New Mexico’s bid, speaking on New Mexico’s large Hispanic, Native American, and rural voters, and the importance of testing presidential candidates on border issues early on the campaign trail. New Mexico is a positive example for the challenges facing the Democratic Party nationally – Hispanic men, rural, working-class, and Native American voters are all key demographic groups that shifted toward Donald Trump in 2024, but with whom Democrats maintained strong ties in New Mexico. New Mexico presents a unique opportunity for presidential candidates to reach each of these voter groups and include them in the crucial early state campaign stage.
This means the national spotlight will be on New Mexico and we will have our work cut out for us . With so many presidential candidates certain to make New Mexico a priority, Team DPNM will be spread thin. We will need your support to make sure we have the resources to hold one of the key primaries that will determine who our next president will be.
One time contributions are great, but monthly recurring contributions help us sustain DPNM without having to ask for checks from big money donors month after month.

If a one-time donation is more of your thing, please chip in whatever you can to Team DPNM today. Like any summer in an election year, we’re busy helping Democrats up and down the ballot campaign, but now, we also have to be prepared to have the infrastructure to handle an early state primary election with national attention.
