My proposed NDAA Amendments passed the House

This week, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Fiscal Year 2027 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), and I am pleased that two of my bipartisan amendments were included. 

The Audit the Pentagon Act restores financial oversight to the Department of Defense, which has failed eight audits in a row, all while billions of taxpayer dollars remain unaccounted for in its budget. Fraud and transparency in the federal government is a chief concern of my constituents. This amendment ensures your taxpayer dollars are spent wisely and do not go to waste.

The second amendment addresses a real training gap. China produces up to 10,000 mining engineers a year; the United States produces about 200. This amendment narrows the NDAA's "mining school" definition to the 14 accredited programs that actually build this workforce — not the 150+ geoscience programs competing for the same dollars. In Arizona, mining drives our economy. This amendment puts training funds where they'll strengthen it and our national security. 

Working across the aisle to secure funding for the Colorado River Basin

I co-led a bipartisan letter to U.S. House leadership, urging the inclusion of funds to address the increasingly dire condition of the Colorado River Basin in any upcoming funding package. The requested funding would support water infrastructure investments, upgrades, and long-term planning. 

For Arizonans, nothing is more important than protecting and cultivating our water resources. And the nation depends on the agricultural, mineral, and national security products made in our state. That’s why I’ve made it my priority to put party politics aside and work across the aisle to ensure Congress takes the natural threats to the Colorado River Basin seriously. I hope appropriators will heed our request and include the necessary funding to prevent this crisis from getting worse.

I voted to STOP insider trading in Congress

This week, I voted to pass H.R. 7008, the Stop Insider Trading Act. The bill bans Members, spouses, and dependent children from buying individual stocks and requires public notice before any sale. One significant step toward earning back trust in our institution is to ban the insider trading loopholes that have infuriated hardworking citizens across the country.

This is not hypothetical. Nancy Pelosi entered Congress in 1987 with a portfolio under $800,000. Today, it’s worth more than $130 million — a return of nearly 17,000 percent. Her family’s net worth has grown from about $3 million to an estimated $280 million. And it’s not just her. Democrat and Republican portfolios routinely beat the S&P 500. That is not luck. It’s access. This bill closes that loophole.

I have not owned any individual stock as a Member of Congress. Members should not profit off information the public does not have. I was pleased to support this bill, and I hope it becomes law very soon.
