John, Donald Trump’s allies clearly want to intimidate voters out of participating in this year’s elections — including threats to deploy ICE agents at polling places. Now Trump’s Department of Justice (DOJ) is also trying to intimidate the top elections officials in every state. The DOJ sent letters threatening criminal prosecution if they allow noncitizens to vote (a MAGA obsession entirely rooted in fiction). When Utah’s Republican Lieutenant Governor got the message, she called it “truly bizarre behavior.” Let’s be clear: Noncitizen voting is already a crime — and more importantly, it just doesn’t happen to any serious extent. Even the right-wing Heritage Foundation has only flagged a grand total of 99 possible examples since 2000. But that's not the point: Trump's allies want to harass the officials who oversee our elections in their relentless effort to suppress the vote and silence communities of color.
By fanning the flames of conspiracy theories around alleged noncitizen voting, Trump’s DOJ is sowing doubt about the integrity of future election results. They’re laying the groundwork to say that Democratic victories aren’t legitimate because of false claims of ineligible voters casting ballots. Republican extremists would have you believe that they only lose elections if other people cheat. Really, they’re telling on themselves — they’re the ones who’ve been racing to cheat in the 2026 midterms with a national gerrymandering frenzy and brazen attempts at voter suppression. All because they’re afraid to face the voters in free and fair elections. From manipulating maps to attacking access to the ballot to trying to intimidate voters, and now trying to intimidate top elections officials, MAGA’s attacks on democracy have escalated to an unprecedented scale in recent months.
