Last week, a federal judge ruled that Donald Trump's “settled” lawsuit against the IRS — the one that ended with his acting attorney general handing him and his entire family sweeping protections from tax audits — was nothing more than a sham case.
The judge found that the case was brought for an improper purpose: to give judicial legitimacy to a “settlement” that was not based in the law or reality. And that because the IRS falls under the control of the Executive Branch, there was “never a question as to who would prevail.”
Essentially, Trump’s settlement amounted to self-dealing. A backroom arrangement, dressed up as a legal settlement, that could shield Trump from a tax bill exceeding $100 million.
This administration is straight-up corrupt, and over the last few weeks that corruption has been on full display:
Trump’s DOJ shut down a criminal investigation into Abbott Laboratories' contaminated baby formula, despite prosecutors saying they had enough evidence to charge the company. This was after Abbott had donated $500,000 to Trump's inaugural fund.
And now it’s been reported that just before the DOJ dropped its investigation, Trump loaded up on Abbott stock. ( This is exactly why we need a stock trading ban for the White House and Congress! )
And then there's that infamous Qatari jet. Trump officially took his first trip on a plane gifted to him by the Qatari government — a plane that cost American taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars to retrofit for security (at least as far as we know, since the Air Force still hasn't released the final price tag).
Amid all of that, this federal court ruling about the IRS lawsuit shows what’s possible when one branch of government does its job and stands up to this blatantly corrupt administration.
Democrats in the House have been working to do the same, but Republicans have repeatedly refused to join us to do anything about the corruption. So long as they control the House, Trump will keep dealing from both sides of the table — and the American people will keep footing the bill.
