John,

Happy Labor Day!

As you're spending time with your friends and family during this long weekend, I want to take the time to remind all of us why we celebrate today.

The hard-working men and women in our labor community have the right priorities in mind: they're committed to building a stronger workforce, creating jobs and outstanding training programs, and fostering economic growth. Their efforts help strengthen families, which is a goal we all share.

Our labor community would not be what it is today if not for the workers who came together years ago to demand specific rights in the workplace -- things we still benefit from today. We're able to enjoy weekends off, there are strong child labor laws in place, and companies are following anti-discrimination laws.

But even with all of the rights we have instilled in the workplace today, we still have things we can improve upon.

As governor, my administration is committed to standing with our Labor community. We're working on reviewing the workers' compensation system so workers have an adequate remedy when injured on the job. We're launching an initiative with the Department of Labor to modernize the technology supporting the unemployment insurance system so that affected workers have better access to needed benefits. And we're working to ensure that private-sector school bus drivers are able to apply for unemployment benefits when work is not available in the summer.

So today, I want you to enjoy your holiday and give thanks to the hard-working men and women who made it possible. Tomorrow, we get back to work continuing their fight to build a better Kansas for all.

Thank you,

Laura
