Congress Made Over $635 Millinion in Stock Trades While Americans Struggled

Friend — right now, members of Congress are allowed to engage in insider trading, which is illegal in any other situation.

That’s right, by allowing members of Congress to buy and sell individual stocks, the law currently allows our representatives to use their tenure in Congress to get incredibly rich, often making millions and millions of dollars.

Some members use insider knowledge from private or classified briefings to get ahead of the markets. Some members even invest in companies that they are tasked with overseeing on their committees. It’s legalized corruption and an incredible conflict of interest.

Luckily for us, Ilhan Omar leads with integrity. She doesn’t trade stocks and she doesn’t cash in on her access to power. She fights for the advancement of the working class, not her investment portfolio or her bank account.

But, given how common this problem is in Washington, Ilhan is wondering: Would you support legislation that would finally BAN members of Congress from trading stocks? Vote here:

YES

NO

I'M NOT SURE

When we elect our representatives, they should be working for us. We pay their salaries with our tax dollars after all!

But the current system introduces a real conflict between the needs of a member’s constituents and their desire to grow their personal fortune. How can we trust that someone is voting with the country’s best interests in mind, rather than their wallet’s?

It should be a given that Congress is not a get-rich-quick scheme, and it’s a sad reality that some people seem to see it as such. It degrades the entire point of public service.

If you agree, add your vote to Ilhan Omar’s survey today and make your voice heard. Combating corruption and abuses of power must be priority number one if we want to restore our democracy and make it work for We the People >>
