I believe if you’re in elected office, you have a duty to fight to change the dark course our country is on, and to be clear about the future we’re fighting for.

A year ago, I showed up at the Delaney Hall detention center in Newark and demanded that we be let inside. What I have seen there continues to shake me to my core: overcrowded, understaffed, and completely inhumane. Mothers, fathers, pastors, children, and innocent people being held in conditions that violate basic dignity.

Since Trump’s return to the presidency, I have never backed down in the fight against these horrors. We need to take serious action: Abolish ICE. End private detention centers. Remove Stephen Miller.

I also left knowing that when we win – and we will – it won't be enough to go back to the way things were before.

We need to build something better.

I know House Democrats are ready to put forward a proactive agenda to deliver results. Policy that reflects the best of who we are as a country, not the worst and most fearful. A government that makes life easier and more affordable for more Americans.

Immigration, housing, childcare, healthcare, groceries – we can tackle every one of these issues if we can meet this moment together and pull off a big win this November.
