Today is an important today. It is a day where we honor the great contributions of the labor movement and working class people in building a better society. Each day, union members across this country stand up and fight for the rights of their fellow workers -- for safe working conditions, for fair and equal compensation, and for the right to organize without retaliation.
And yet, despite the clear value of the labor movement, the attacks on unions and working people continue. From so-called right to work laws to the propping up of corporate power, we see the threats to unions both on the state and federal level. Let me be clear: the weakening of unions is an attack on working class people, and we must do everything in our power to stop these attacks.
I'll leave you with a quote from famous labor and women's rights leader, Rose Schneiderman:
“What the woman who labors wants is the right to live, not simply exist—the right to life as the rich woman has the right to life, and the sun and music and art. You have nothing that the humblest worker has not a right to have also. The worker must have bread, but she must have roses, too.”
Each day, may we join together to fight for not just the right to exist, but also for the right to live.
In solidarity,
