It's not only the prime minister who's stepping into new shoes this week.

One of Andy Burnham's first tasks as PM has been to name his new cabinet. And with a new government comes an opportunity to get a debt justice law on the new government’s agenda from day one.

Just a few weeks back, we heard that the government had actually threatened Ethiopia's debt vultures with legislation if they didn't drop their court action against the East African country

We know our campaign to stop the debt vultures is being heard. Now, with new appointments being made across government, it's a critical moment to call on your MP to champion a debt justice law.

Debt  vultures are private creditors that buy up debt at rock bottom prices from countries in crisis and threatening to sue for large repayments in order to make vast profits.

Right now, they are getting rich by draining national budgets, taking away resources from schools, hospitals, and essential public services. But nine in ten of the debt contracts between lower-income countries and private lenders are overseen by UK law. That means our government has the power to stop this injustice.

A new law here could stop the debt vultures in their tracks – and help countries in crisis get their debt cancelled. It’s time to build the momentum that will turn the dial on the debt crisis.
