Dear John:

In dueling op-eds and online conversations, some people are asking if New York City is “over.”

I love this city. I love its unmatched energy, diversity, and creativity. I love that we’re simultaneously scrappy and sure we’re the best. But there’s no doubt that widening economic inequality, an affordability crisis, unaddressed institutional racism, and the absence of strong citywide leadership have hurt us -- and that was before the COVID-19 pandemic.

New York isn’t “over.” But to make our city work for everyone , we need new leadership that puts our long-term well-being over short-term politics, so our future can be brighter than our past.

Our people-powered campaign has a critical end-of-month deadline coming up, and we’ve set a $6,000 grassroots goal. If you’re able, can you chip in $10 to bring new, bold, progressive leadership to NYC? [[link removed]]

Since the “New York is over” discourse was kicked off by a viral LinkedIn post, reporters, critics, and famous residents like Jerry Seinfeld have all chimed in.

But this conversation is emblematic of the challenges facing our city. It ignores the millions of working-class New Yorkers who can’t retreat to summer homes or work remotely from other cities.

As urbanist Robert Sullivan put it: “For a lot of people [in New York City], the decision to leave is not a long debate; it’s an eviction notice.”

This is still one of the wealthiest cities in the world. The missing piece isn’t entrepreneurial energy; we’ve still got plenty of that. It’s political courage -- leaders with a clear vision who will fight for an equitable economic recovery that leaves no one behind.

That’s the kind of leadership we want to bring to the NYC Comptroller’s office, but I need your help to get us there. Can you chip in $10 before our end-of-month deadline? Remember, your donation will be matched 8-to-1 → [[link removed]]
