What Greg Abbott and Elon Musk call economic development, I call
corruption.
Elon Musk recently demanded $1.66 billion in local tax breaks for his new
project in Grimes County, and he gave rural school board members an
ultimatum — give me the tax cuts, or I’ll take my business elsewhere.
He got what he wanted, and now parents and taxpayers in Texas school
districts are left footing the bill for growth while a literal
trillionaire gets off without paying his fair share.
Not only is Musk getting away with a major tax break, but Abbott also
handed him a $17.3 million state grant for his new semiconductor business.
Now, Musk is returning the favor, writing Abbott a $500,000 campaign
check.
While public schools across Texas are forced to lay off teachers and cut
programs because Abbott used taxpayer dollars for his school voucher scam,
he has no problem handing out massive tax breaks to a trillionaire
bankrolling his campaign.
We have a message for Abbott: Texas doesn't belong to Elon Musk, and our
state government shouldn't be a machine for corporate donors.
When I’m governor, I’ll put an end to these sneaky backroom deals, protect
public school funding, and make sure massive corporations pay their fair
share.
But to defeat Greg Abbott this November, I need resources on the ground in
every corner of this state.
