That’s me in the gray suit at the State Capitol.
During the hearing, I spoke out against their segregationist gerrymander and Louisiana Republican Senator Jay Morris shouted at me, “Y’all need to shut up, boy.”
We all know what he meant by this.
Jay Morris is the same Louisiana senator who passed legislation to eliminate the New Orleans Criminal Clerk of Court seat to prevent a duly elected Black man, Calvin Duncan, from taking office.
When asked why he was so motivated to eliminate Duncan’s office, Morris said, “There are many ways to skin a cat around here.” Checo Yancy, a Black civil rights leader, astutely responded to Morris saying: “We know what you mean … white men around here used to say there are many ways to skin a negro.”
This senator led the charge to suspend our May 16th Congressional elections and has offered up many ways to carve up Louisiana so every congressional district is majority white.
They can lie through their teeth that voter suppression and seat elimination are not about race, but their racist dog whistles give them away every single time.
This fight started right here in the Louisiana House, and it’s already shaping courts and legislatures across the country. Can you chip in $25, $10, or even just $5 today to help us fight back in Louisiana?
