What led to immigration enforcement officers’ killings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti — and what happened in the 18 days between their deaths — is the subject of a detailed CNN [link removed] piece by Jake Tapper. 

From the start of the administration’s enforcement surge in Minnesota, the Justice Department told the Minnesota U.S. Attorney’s Office to take actions "antithetical to principles of law enforcement," said Tom Calhoun-Lopez, then the chief of the office’s Violent and Major Crimes section. 

Calhoun-Lopez and four of his colleagues resigned in protest on Jan. 13. Several others there and at the Department of Justice have resigned since then. 

False claims and misleading information were a recurring theme, Tapper reports. 

Elsewhere, a team at The Washington Post [link removed] digs into overcrowding at a migrant detainee holding center in New York City. 

"ICE agents were arresting immigrants much faster than they could be transported to longer-term detention centers ... waylaying dozens of detainees for days in crowded rooms that usually hold people for no more than 12 hours," the team writes in the multimedia piece. Among the results: People with major health challenges did not receive proper care, and at least at times, detainees only had room to sleep sitting up. 

A federal court stepped in to halt overcrowding in New York, but ICE data indicate that overcrowding at facilities around the country has remained a problem. 

Also in The Washington Post [link removed], former attorney general Alberto R. Gonzales offers poignant suggestions on how to make immigration enforcement more effective.  

"The country needn’t choose between border security and human dignity," writes Gonzalez, who served during the George W. Bush administration. "Nor does enforcing the law preclude reforming it.
