John,

Yesterday, as Arizonans voted in their primary, the Justice Department deployed federal election monitors to polling sites in Maricopa, Apache, and Pima counties.

On its own, this was routine. The Civil Rights Division has sent monitors to polling places for decades as one of the tools built after the Voting Rights Act to protect voters, especially Native and Latino voters, from being turned away.

So why am I writing to you about it?

Because the tool is only as good as the hands holding it. And consider whose hands those are now.

This is the same administration whose president, asked whether he'd send ICE and the National Guard to polling places in November, refused to rule it out and said he'd "do anything necessary."

The same administration whose Homeland Security Secretary stood at a podium last week and threatened to strip funding from states, threatened election officials with prison, and told voters his department targets that they'd be hunted down. The same one that gutted the bipartisan federal election commission weeks ago.

A federal presence at the polls is protection when the people directing it want everyone to vote. It becomes something else entirely when they don't.

November is the test. And Arizona is one of the six battleground states where our Operation: Vote Safe teams will be on the ground, trained local organizers, veterans and faith leaders, standing with voters so that whatever shows up at those polling places, no one faces it alone.

Chip in today to help us fund Operation: Vote Safe organizers in Arizona and all six battleground states. [ [link removed] ]
