"Labor Day symbolizes our determination to achieve an economic freedom for the average man which will give his political freedom reality." -Franklin D. Roosevelt
Team,
I've always been inspired by President Franklin Roosevelt. During the greatest crisis faced by our nation since the Civil War, FDR summoned the best of government to restore a country crippled by depression and the devastating hardship of millions of working families.
One of Roosevelt's greatest achievements was his consistent support for workers' rights and the role of unions in building a strong workforce that, in turn, created economic freedom for millions of Americans.
"It is one of the characteristics of a free and democratic nation that it have free and independent labor unions."
Today, in these challenging times, Roosevelt's words have never been more apt.
As the Trump administration does all it can to suppress workers' rights while providing millionaires and billionaires with massive tax cuts, we need to invest in our workforce and strengthen unions fighting to keep our nation free and democratic.
We also can't forget it was FDR who recognized the importance and need for equality of women in the workplace by appointing the workers-rights advocate Frances Perkins as the first woman Secretary of Labor - and the first woman ever in a presidential cabinet.
Team, that's the courage and commitment to hard-working Americans in every part of our country we need today, 86 years after FDR and Frances Perkins.
On this Labor Day 2019, let us renew our commitment to restoring a government that works for all people while leveling the economic playing field for America's working men and women.
Team, I'm going to keep fighting for hard-working Americans in every part of our country. I hope you will join me.
Michael
