William Graham Sumner was born on October 30, 1840, almost 30 years to the day before the birth of American libertarian, Albert Jay Nock, whose career bears a striking similarity to Sumner's. Like Sumner, Nock began his career, while still in his 20s, as an Episcopal clergyman. Like Nock, Sumner went into such work largely to please his family. Nock walked away from it after little more than a decade. Sumner didn't make it even five years.
