Markwayne Mullin's threats on Friday were aimed at a handful of states to start. But the machinery he described of federal agents empowered to pursue and prosecute voters, election officials threatened with prison, funding held hostage unless states surrender control of their own elections is not going to stop at a few states.

And the state that has sat at the center of Trump's election obsession from the very beginning is Georgia.

He has never let Georgia go. The phone call. The indictment. The FBI raid on a Fulton County election office just weeks ago. Every escalation this administration makes, Georgia feels first and hardest. If federal agents are deployed to intimidate voters anywhere this fall, Georgia is near the top of the list.

Here is what gives me hope. The one thing they cannot threaten, defund, or subpoena into silence is a trusted neighbor standing at a polling place, telling frightened voters: you have the right to be here, and you have the right to decide who gets elected.

That is what our Operation: Vote Safe organizers do. Veterans and faith leaders, rooted in their own communities, in place before the intimidation arrives — in Georgia and in all six of our battleground states. They don't answer to Markwayne Mullin. They answer to the people whose votes they're there to protect.
