Friend,

Earlier this week, we celebrated Women’s Equality Day and the 100th anniversary of the adoption of the 19th amendment, mandating that the right of citizens to vote cannot be based on sex and securing the right to vote for (some) women.

We recognize the continued fight ahead of us to ensure equality for all women — especially women of color, low-income women, and trans women.  

But we also have cause to celebrate: Kamala Harris will be the first Black, the first Asian American, and the first woman vice president.

We still have work to do. Celebrate this centennial and the historic moment we can achieve in November by pledging to vote for Kamala Harris and Joe Biden.

Kamala Harris’s motto comes from her mom, “You may be the first, but make sure you’re not the last.” 

And Senator Harris is no stranger to being first: She was the first Black woman to be elected district attorney in California, the first woman to be attorney general in California history, and now, she represents California as the first Indian American senator. 

She’s also no stranger to fighting for those whose voices are often silenced and advocating for justice. As attorney general, she established the Bureau of Children’s Justice — making sure children’s rights are protected. As a senator, she stood up for our immigrant community by fighting for the DREAM Act. She stood up for me, and so many countless other victims of sexual violence when she held Brett Kavanaugh fiercely accountable for his past actions during his nomination hearing for the Supreme Court. 

Kamala Harris will be the first woman vice president, but I have no doubt the work that she’ll do in that office will ensure she won’t be the last.
