My friend Bernie Sanders and I have introduced a bill in Congress called the Universal School Meals Program Act.

The idea is simple. When we send our kids to school, they should be focused on their education, not worrying about when they will get their next meal. It’s time to remove the stigma that kids from low-income families face and provide food for all of our children in America’s public schools.

Friend, when Minnesota passed legislation to provide free school meals in 2023, there were of course naysayers and opposition, especially from Republicans.

But three years later, this initiative has turned out to be a popular program and a smashing success. Hundreds of millions of meals have been served and countless families have felt the relief of knowing their child will get the food they need regardless of their family’s financial situation.

And years of research consistently back up the idea that access to free school meals significantly improves educational outcomes by improving attendance, concentration, and performance while reducing behavioral issues.

Now it’s time to take this idea nationwide, and ensure that every child, no matter their income, gets the nutrition they need to stay focused on their studies and thrive in any educational environment.

While this may be a no-brainer for most Americans, powerful corporate interests and the far-right have worked together to block my bill from being passed. Please, help us rally support for my universal school meals by signing on as a citizen Co-Sponsor of my bill with Bernie Sanders today:
