The Trump administration’s Department of Justice is trying to send me to prison for up to 17 years.
Why? Because I showed up to do my job.
Last year, I went to the Delaney Hall immigration detention facility in Newark for an official oversight visit. ICE escalated what should have been a routine oversight visit and wrongfully arrested the mayor of Newark, Ras Baraka.
Mayor Baraka’s charges were quickly thrown out. But Donald Trump’s DOJ set their sights on me, and baselessly charged me with crimes for my oversight work—for doing my job. These charges carry a sentence of 17 years in prison.

Last month, my legal team argued before a three-judge panel at the Third Circuit Court of Appeals that this weaponization of the Department of Justice cannot stand. This administration is using the DOJ to do their personal bidding against the people they do not like. We are fighting for this case to be dismissed. We have civil rights groups, former January 6th prosecutors, and bipartisan former members of Congress standing with us.
We shouldn’t be spending taxpayer dollars to prosecute members of Congress for showing up to do their jobs. But because Washington is determined to push this case forward, I have to fight back with everything I have — for my family, for my constituents, and for our democracy.
