Last night, President Trump delivered a primetime address that once again spread mistruths and disinformation about the integrity of our elections and demanded sweeping changes to how Americans register and vote. He is attempting to intercede in matters that are almost entirely within the control of state governments and is himself harming our election security by dismissing the board of the federal Election Assistance Commission.
As government officials, we have a responsibility to protect the public’s trust in how taxpayer dollars are spent and in the institutions that make our democracy work. The President is doing the opposite.
Baseless claims have real-world consequences. Every time a leader tells Americans our institutions are broken, they chip away at the very foundation of our society. It’s wrong, and it’s dangerous.
Our commitment to transparency and competency is evident in the work of our dedicated election officials across the state. In Maryland, the State Board of Elections, composed of committed neighbors and fellow Marylanders, is dedicated to upholding the integrity of our elections and ensuring every qualified voter can cast their ballot with ease and confidence.
I have always believed that accountability rests on transparency and facts. Whether managing state finances or discussing elections, public officials must share facts and data, no matter how unpopular. The same principle guides my work every day as your Comptroller. Since taking office, I have worked to be as transparent about our challenges and opportunities - both as an agency and as a state - as I possibly can be.
Rather than fueling distrust and division, we should focus on strengthening our institutions, protecting the rights of eligible voters, and ensuring that government really works for the people it serves.
As long as I have the privilege of serving as your Comptroller, I will lead with integrity and stand up for the values that make Maryland strong.
Thank you for being engaged, informed, and committed to our future.
My best,
(She, Her, Hers)
