Beginner Level Chainsaw Training Workshops Offered

Maine Woodland Owners has announced that it will once again offer its popular chainsaw training workshops this spring and summer at locations throughout the state. This hands-on beginner-level training provides instruction on saw handling and maintenance, protective equipment, firewood cutting, and tree felling. Participants must have safety gear (some gear will be available to borrow), a lunch, and a folding chair.  

Instructed by Jack Houtz, a certified logging professional trainer with significant experience with chainsaws and training others to safely handle a chainsaw, all workshops are open to the public, and registration for each workshop is $65.00 per person. The workshop is not a full Certified Logging Professional training. 

 Workshops run from 8:30 AM - 3:00 PM and dates and locations include:  


* Meadowbrook Forest in Surry on Friday, July 17 (co-sponsored with Blue Hill Heritage Trust) 

* Minot Farm in West Minot on Saturday, August 1 (co-sponsored with Androscoggin Land Trust and Androscoggin County SWCD).

Sugarbush Management Field Day at Nutkin Knoll Farm

*Host*/*Sponsor*: UMaine Extension, Maine Forest Service, the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, Audubon, MOFGA 

Maple sugarbush management can be a complex process. Extreme weather along with new and native forest pests increase the importance of intentional forest management planning. Fortunately, there are several service provider groups and experienced sugarbush managers to support those looking to learn more about the process. This program is designed for sugarbush managers, consulting foresters, forestry service providers, and those looking to learn more about sugarbush management. 

Topics discussed will include: 


* The influence of forest conditions on sap yields 

* Assessing sugarbush habitat 

* Forestry approaches to enhance sugarbush resilience 

* Invasive species management 

* Certification programs 

* Cost share opportunities for management 

* And more. 

SAF CEU credits and Maine BPC Pesticide credits are being applied for, and credit availability will be confirmed soon. Lunch will be provided (please note any dietary restrictions on your registration).

Pre-Commercial Thinning & Timber Stand Improvement Tour - Lovell

Join Western Maine Chapter Leader and Maine Forest Service District Forester Mike Richard and Maine Woodland Owners staff for a program for landowners to tour a recently completed pre-commercial thinning operation on this Land Trust property. We'll discuss details and benefits of the operation, management goals, and landowner assistance programs including Woodwise Reslience and Natural Resources Conservation Service EQIP and CSP. Emerald Ash Borer Update for Cities and Towns - Madison

The Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry and Somerset Woods Trustees are hosting a workshop *July 29, 9:30-12:00* to update public tree and forest managers and public works staff along with interested community members on the known status of emerald ash borer in Maine, local and state management efforts, municipal support opportunities, and will include plenty of time for Q&A. The program will begin at 9:30 AM on July 29th at the Parkman Hill Farm in Madison and will run roughly 2.5 hours.

Forest Walk & Tree Talk at Autumn View Preserve - Boothbay Harbor

*Location:* Autumn View Preserve at the end of Autumn View Lane (formerly Giles Road), Boothbay Harbor, ME 

*Event Type:* Nature Exploration 

Investigate the wonders of our local forests while exploring Boothbay Region Land Trust's newest preserve during an informative walk with Maine Forest Service District Forester Jared Gregory. This walk will focus on tree identification, while branching into broader topics such as forest ecology, historical land use, silviculture, and wildlife habitat. Jared's flexible, conversational style invites questions and curiosity. This is a great opportunity to deepen your understanding of Midcoast Maine's woodlands, learn practical tree ID tips, and explore one of our newest protected spaces. 

This walk will be approximately 1 mile in length over uneven terrain. Please wear sturdy shoes and bring bottled water. Space is limited with registration required.
