Dear Friend, Establishment Democrats are going after Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez . . . again. After AOC refused to go along with the House Democratic leadership when they caved to Mitch McConnell and supported a border funding bill with no protections for the kids being held in filthy, overcrowded cages, the establishment came after her. The corporate-friendly "Problem Solvers Caucus" is organizing to undermine AOC and other new progressives.1 A former DNC official went on Fox News to patronizingly insult Rep. Ocasio-Cortez, saying "Alexandria and her friends haven't been in Congress enough to understand."2 Establishment Democrats have tried to rein in AOC and her squad of newly elected progressives from before they were even sworn in. Those elected leaders need help — including strong staffers who can build power. That's why Demand Progress helped launched the Progressive Talent Pipeline to help recruit and train the amazing staffers that elected members will need. Big money and big business still have influence and allies on Capitol Hill and in the Democratic caucus. Progressive members of Congress are ready and willing to fight back, but they need the strongest possible team to be successful. The bottom line is that without excellent staff, no member of Congress can be truly effective. There are some truly incredible people working on Capitol Hill for Democratic members of Congress. But they need help, and progressives simply haven't done as good a job as corporations, the Koch brothers, and other right-wing organizations in providing the constant influx of talent that's needed. The proof is clear in studies that show that congressional staff are consistently biased toward more conservative views than the voters.3 As part of the largest incoming class of Democrats since Watergate, newly elected progressives like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar, Ayanna Pressley, and Rashida Tlaib hit the ground running. They're fighting for net neutrality, pushing for a Green New Deal, taking on Trump, and working to stop new wars. The Progressive Talent Pipeline was created to make sure we're doing everything we can to help them succeed. The inaugural class of the Progressive Talent Pipeline has been a smashing success. We were overwhelmed with amazing applicants who continue to fill crucial positions on Capitol Hill. Now we're deciding whether we can afford to keep running the program into the future. We don't have big corporations behind us to pour millions into this program. So to keep it going, we're counting on you to donate whatever you can. Thanks for standing with us.
