Tonight, Donald Trump did what he always does when the facts are not on his side:
He lied.
These attacks are not about election security. They are about undermining confidence in our democracy before voters have the chance to hold Trump and Republicans accountable this November.
Here in Oregon, we know better.
For nearly 30 years, Oregon’s vote-by-mail system has allowed voters across our state to cast their ballots safely, securely, and conveniently. We will not let Donald Trump or his allies take that freedom away.
Trump is attacking our elections because he is weak, unpopular, and terrified of the voters. His approval rating is below 40 percent nationally and just 29 percent among independent voters. Democrats need to gain only four seats to take back the U.S. House, and Trump knows his failed agenda is putting Republican power at risk.
But Trump is not acting alone.
Republican candidate for governor Christine Drazan has spent years advancing the same election-denial agenda here in Oregon. She introduced legislation to take away vote-by-mail, opposed multilingual voter information, and voted against allowing mail-in ballots that are postmarked by Election Day, but arrive after, to be counted, positioning herself as further to the right than Donald Trump’s Supreme Court.
Trump lies about our elections. Drazan wants to help carry out his agenda.
We are fighting back.
