I have often mentioned how proud I am to nominate students from across Florida’s First District to America’s military service academies. It is truly one of the most rewarding parts of serving in Congress.
Many people have reached out and asked when I am holding another “Academy Night” — an informal, informational meeting about the service academy application process. I will be holding another Academy Night on Tuesday, September 8 — but in light of the pandemic, it will be held virtually. All of this is aided by the fact that Trump’s record indicates that he’s been privately pro-pot for decades, and his prominent allies are right now. Although Trump has teased cracking down on drug deals, as far back as 30 years ago, Trump ardently slammed lawmakers for failing to legalize drugs. Now, he has two of the most pro-pot members of Congress, Cory Gardner and Matt Gaetz, lobbying him to embrace legalization.

Those behind the Settle for Biden website and popular Instagram account with more than 126,000 followers agreed with Gaetz’s premise. “Yep, @mattgaetz — that’s our hope!” the group said in a tweet. “The future of this nation depends on our ability to elect Joe Biden and Joe Biden’s ability to embrace calls for progressive change.” It added, “Matt Gaetz says that Biden will be a puppet of Sanders and AOC. To us, that sounds like an endorsement!"

The other force within the party is the neo-isolationists. They are sick and tired of U.S. involvement in the Middle East and have little interest in America’s alliances with Europe. They are mainly worried about the economic challenge from China. They’d pull up the drawbridge, build the wall, and live in the fortress. This faction has traditionally been led by a Paul—first Ron and then his son Rand—but others have joined the fray, including Senator Mike Lee of Utah and Representative Matt Gaetz of Florida. Several Republicans have told me that it is impossible to understate the appeal that this view has in the grassroots factions of the party, even though most elected officials are uncomfortable with it.
