Email from Wisconsin Institute for Law & Liberty WILL Restores Common Sense to Wisconsin Rental Laws Yesterday, WILL secured a major legal victory for property owners in Sister Bay after the Wisconsin Court of Appeals ruled that the Village’s four-bedroom cap for vacation rentals operates as an illegal “back-door prohibition on renting.” We argued that Wisconsin’s right-to-rent law gives homeowners the right to rent their entire home on a short-term basis. Sister Bay disregarded that law and attempted to impose a four-bedroom limit on short-term rentals, effectively dictating where renters sleep within a private home. While a circuit court initially sided with the Village on nearly all claims, WILL appealed, and the Court of Appeals reversed. The Court’s holding applies statewide. REGISTER WILL Sues to Block Wisconsin’s $250 Million DEI Program A Wisconsin-based taxpayer association, represented by WILL, filed a new lawsuit challenging the Wisconsin Supplier Diversity Program, a procurement program that spends over $250 million each year purchasing supplies and services based on race. Administered through the Wisconsin Department of Administration, the program awards some minority-owned businesses a 5% bid preference across all state procurement and contracting — including engineering services, building construction services, highway construction, and general procurement. White, Middle Eastern, and most Asian small-business owners are ineligible for this program simply because of their race. The lawsuit filed follows a recently successful effort by WILL to challenge race-based scholarships previously awarded by the state. WILL Managing Vice President Dan Lennington stated, “Governor Evers doles out government contracts to businesses based on race. He’s spent nearly $1.5 billion on this massive DEI scheme, all on the taxpayers’ dime.
