3 weeks to the biggest climate protest in history
Dear John,

12.5 billion tonnes of ice in Greenland just melted into the sea 50 years early. [1] The Amazon has been burning for over 3 weeks. [2] Our house is on fire. What do we need to do to make Leo Varadkar act like it?

I’ll tell you. We need to stand up with the school strikers. On Friday September 20, on the day of the global #ClimateStrike, Leo needs to see people out on the streets of every town and city in Ireland demanding action.

There’ll be millions marching across the world. Thousands of us will be in Dublin and Cork. And this is about more than Dublin and Cork. We need our politicians to see that the whole country is up in arms.

But to make this happen, everyone who can needs to step up and organise these protests in support of this global strike led by school students on Friday September 20.

Can you organise a #ClimateStrike action in your community, workplace, or school? There’s a team of brilliant volunteers ready to help you make your action a success.

Your action could be as simple as going out on the street with your colleagues at lunch to take a picture in support of the strike, taking a photo together at a local landmark, or meeting up at your school gate. Or it could be organising a big group to take the day off and attend one of the big #ClimateStrike rallies around the country. (More ideas here)

Together we’re going to make this huge because we know it works. Last March, 16,000 young people across Ireland and 1.6 million globally marched for the School Strike for Climate. The power of young people walking out of school was so strong that Leo Varadkar had to come out in support of them. [3] Then his party supported a motion in the Dail declaring a climate emergency. [4]

But days later, they signed off on oil drilling licenses for Exxon Mobil and a Chinese State owned company that will see Ireland pulling fossil fuels out of the ground until after 2040. [5] The glaring contradiction between his words and his actions is just not good enough. That’s why now is the moment to turn up the heat.

We need to make September 20th the moment in history after which no politician can allow further harm to our climate - and to do that, your community needs to be a part of this action.

Can you be the one to make sure they are? Fill out this short form if you’re interested in organising an event in support, and we’ll be with you all the way to help you pull off a powerful action.

We’ll be in touch next week to invite you to all the events people across the movement have put their hands up to organise.

I’ll see you on the streets on September 20!
