Long before I ran for Congress, I had the opportunity to serve as policy director for Barack Obama’s 2004 campaign for the United States Senate.

That campaign taught me something I have carried with me ever since:

Winning takes more than a good candidate.

It takes a clear message. A strong organization. The resources to compete. And people willing to believe in a campaign before everyone else catches on.

Since then, I have gone on to win five elections of my own and help build coalitions around some of the toughest challenges facing working families.

But I also saw the same problem over and over again.
