The One Big Beautiful Bill Act at One Year

Back in 2025, when I was beginning to think about running in this election, I met a man who had lived in Roanoke his entire life and clearly cared about the people in the county. I could hear the frustration in his voice about conditions in the county. He kept talking about being afraid of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBA). I asked him if it was really that bad. He paused for a long moment and said, “Randolph County has been on a precipice for a long time, and if they pass that bill, we’re going over the edge, and nothing is going to stop it.”

The OBBA passed on July 4, 2025. Mike Rogers, Randolph County’s Congressman, voted for it twice. When I heard the OBBA had passed, I think that was when I knew something had to be done.

It’s been a year. It’s time to take stock of the OBBA and its impact on working-class Americans over the past 12 months.

A Few Things to Think About

ALABAMA IN THE NEWS

📰 Another rural Alabama hospital filing for bankruptcy

Atmore Community Hospital, a 49-bed rural hospital in Escambia County, has announced it will file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy as part of a financial restructuring plan while continuing to provide patient care. The filing highlights the ongoing financial challenges facing rural hospitals in Alabama and the need for long-term solutions to preserve access to health care in underserved communities.

📰 In Rural Alabama, Volunteers Step In Where Public Services Are Scarce

A report on rural Alabama highlights how volunteers and nonprofit clinics are stepping in to provide maternal and primary health care where public services are limited, as rural hospital closures, provider shortages, and high uninsured rates leave many residents without adequate access to care. The article argues that while volunteer efforts are helping fill critical gaps, lasting improvements will require stronger government investment and policies to expand health care access in underserved communities.

📰 Childersburg residents raise transparency concerns over possible data center

Childersburg residents raised concerns about transparency and public involvement as city officials continue discussions that could lead to a proposed data center at the city's industrial park. While no sale or project has been finalized, the debate reflects growing public scrutiny of the increasing number of data center developments being considered across Alabama.

One Last Thought Until Next Week

This week has been incredibly busy. We started our town hall meetings on Thursday in Pell City. We had a strong turnout and some great questions from the audience, covering topics ranging from the Israel/Palestine conflict to policing in America to the future of the Anniston Army Depot. Videos from the Q&A session will be posted online soon.

We are planning three additional town halls in the coming weeks. We’ll share the details as we nail them down. We will visit every county in the district before November 3rd and give you something you haven’t had in a long time: a chance to meet face-to-face with someone who wants to represent you in Congress.

We are also spending more time on fundraising and working to secure key endorsements to raise the campaign's profile. We’ve been working with our local county leads to begin our phone banking efforts. So things won’t be slowing down over the next 3 ½ months.

Stay with us. It’s getting to be fun.

We’re 112 days away from the general election.

We'll talk soon,

Lee
