John,

On Friday night, federal agents showed up at the homes of New York Times
journalists and handed them subpoenas.

Their offense? Reporting on the plane that Trump got as a gift from the
Qatari government.

The reporters are now ordered to testify before a federal grand jury this
Wednesday. All for reporting the very real national security threat that
the Qatari plane lacks the antimissile defenses of the old Air Force One.

The DOJ didn't dispute the reporting. Instead, they subpoenaed the
reporters.

Before the story even ran, a senior FBI official asked the Times to hold
it and demanded to know the sources. The Times refused both.

So the administration escalated. Subpoenas, delivered by federal agents,
at reporters' homes, on a Friday night.

And it's a pattern that's been going on since the beginning of the Trump
administration:

* The FBI raided Washington Post reporter Hannah Natanson's home and
seized her phones and laptops.
* ABC and CBS paid Trump millions to settle baseless lawsuits.
* The Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post, and the BBC have all
faced lawsuits or federal criminal actions since Trump retook office.

The goal is simple: scare journalists and their sources into silence. When
that happens, the public knows less. That's the point.

COURIER refuses to be intimidated into silence. But independent media like
us can only survive if readers fund it.
