National: A Tough Road 🛣️

The road to redemption has many ups and downs, just ask Alice Marie Johnson. In 1996 she was sentenced to life in prison plus 25 years without the possibility of parole for her role in a nonviolent federal drug case but has since been granted clemency by President Trump.

Now, she is a staunch advocate for criminal justice reform and even spoke in front of the Republican National Committee Convention about her experience. Find out more below. ⬇️

State: Don't Touch That (Defund) Button! 👉 🔴

Governor Greg Abbott, Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, and Speaker Dennis Bonnen announced that they would prioritize legislation that would freeze property tax revenues for any city that defunded police. 👮

Dr. Derek Cohen, director of the Foundation’s Citizens Defense campaign, stated, “The Texas Public Policy Foundation unequivocally supports the goal of the ‘Big 3’ to ensure that public safety is adequately funded for all Texans, regardless of affluence or location. The proposal is in the vein of a central conservative truth: that one of government’s few foundational responsibilities is to be the guarantor of individual rights and personal liberty. That cannot happen within a vacuum.”

Local: Homeless Not Hopeless 🙏

Texas Public Policy Foundation Executive Director Kevin Roberts was joined by Congressman Chip Roy (TX-21), Managing Partner of MissionPoint Partners Michele Steeb, and Discovery Institute's Director of the Center for Wealth, Poverty, & Morality Chris Rufo to talk about this important topic. Tune in to the discussion below! 👇
