John,

I wanted to share an exciting update from our special session. Earlier this week, my bill, HB 5068, which prohibits creditors from garnishing, or seizing, emergency relief payments from Virginians, passed with unanimous support from the House Courts of Justice committee! This passage is a huge step forward, and I’m looking forward to passing it on the House floor next week.

Currently, the loophole in our regulations allows creditors to forcefully seize relief payments, like the stimulus checks, from everyday, struggling Virginians. Our Commonwealth’s residents were given these relief funds because they know best how to spend it. No one should stand in the way of someone using their money to get their next meal or buying medical supplies, least of all, predatory creditors.

This bill would end that practice and give the financial power back to the people! I’m looking forward to passing it on both sides of the General Assembly.

I’m also proud to say HB 5098, which makes it a hate crime to make a false 9-1-1 call on the basis of race, reported out of the same Courts of Justice committee hearing! This bill, patroned by Delegate Askew and which I am Chief Co-Patron of, will be one more important step to passing true racial justice reform this special session.

Our Special Session has started off great, but we still have a lot of work to do. I’m looking forward to seeing what more we can accomplish in the coming weeks, and I’m happy to have support from folks like you while we do it!

Sincerely,

Hala Ayala

P.S. I’m running for Lt. Governor to continue making progress on issues like these. I want you to join our campaign and help me hit my end-of-month goal with a contribution of $25 today.
