Howdy Comrades!
Welcome your weekly Houston DSA newsletter fix. I'm the chapter Communications Secretary, Stephen Adkison. We're officially in Halloween Season with issue 13, but, more importantly, tomorrow is Labor Day! Let's all remember the struggles of our comrades past, and build upon the foundation they set.
The newsletter is designed to not only be a recap of the phenomenal work our chapter does, but an easy way for newer folks and potential members to check us out! So, please, share the subscription link with comrades in town!
Without further ado, here is issue 13 of the Houston DSA newsletter!

Timothy Faust Author Talk
|
Friend of the chapter Tim Faust, who you may remember from our past Medicare for All Town Hall, just published a book, Health Justice Now! Inside, he explains what single payer is, why we don’t yet have it, and how it can be won. He inspires us to believe in a world where we could leave our job without losing healthcare for ourselves and our kids; where affordable housing is healthcare; a
nd where social justice links arm-in-arm with health justice for us all. Single payer is the tool—health justice is the goal!
Lucky us, he'll be in town this Tuesday, September 3, at Brazos Bookstore to talk about it! Come hear him talk at 6:30, say hi to us (we'll have a table), and join us afterwards for a social at Under the Volcano (2349 Bissonnet St)!

Counter-Recruitment in the Schools
|
Are you a teacher, or do you know one? Then we have a request for you! We are looking for teachers willing to have a speaker come talk about options other than joining the military. As I'm sure you all know, the US military often recruits low-income students who don't see any better options for their life. We're looking to show them the harms of the military and what they could do instead. If that is something you'd like to see in your classroom, please fill out this form.

This week was bookended by two great events! Last Sunday was our Chili Cookoff Potluck Fundraiser, which was a huge success! Thanks to all who came for the great turnout, all who cooked for the great chili, and congratulations to all the winners! And yesterday, many of our comrades showed up to counter-protest the right-wing hate groups in support of our Muslim community alongside anti-fascists from across the state! Thanks for showing everyone that fascists are not welcome in Houston!
In between, the Reading Group met to discuss the first half of Angela Davis's Are Prisons Obsolete? They plan on finishing the book at the next meeting on September 9, and after that, on September 23, they will begin discussing The People's Republic of Walmart. Join them for top-notch discussions and to learn together our values as a chapter!
Our State and Local Working Group also met to discuss local policy and strategy. On the agenda was the ongoing Stop TxDot I-45 Expansion campaign and the unexpected vacancy in HD 148. If you want to help form Houston DSA's political strategy, come out to the next meeting September 25!
