4th of July edition and more!

We hope you had a fun and relaxing Independence day weekend!

A quick note from our Chair, Annette Osnos, who was dressed all in white to reflect the Suffragette movement.

“Last weekend, Teton County Democrats showed up in force for the largest parade ever held in Teton County. I wore white in honor of the suffragettes—a reminder that while women won the right to vote, protecting all of our rights requires continued participation. Your voice is your power.

Thank you to everyone who marched with us and joined the picnic afterward. As we gear up for the election season, our focus is on getting out the vote and increasing visibility for our candidates. If you have ideas—big or small—please send me a text or email. We'd love to hear them.

The League of Women Voters will host a County Commission candidate forum next week at 5:30 p.m. at the library. It's a great opportunity to hear directly from the candidates about issues that matter to our community.

Please also join Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains for Cocktails for a Cause on Thursday, August 13, from 6–8 p.m. near downtown Jackson. I'm honored to serve as host and emcee as PPRM CEO Adrienne Mansanares discusses the future of reproductive health care and abortion access in Wyoming and the region. Thank you to everyone who came out to the parade this past Saturday, to celebrate our Nation’s 250th birthday! Many thanks to all those who marched, and great job to all the candidates that marched with us, or on their own!
We were extremely lucky to have two Democratic candidates for national office present, James Byrd ([link removed]) and Lisa Kinney ([link removed]) . We had a great picnic afterwards, with some great discussion and a great speech by our Chair, Annette Osnos.

Parade fun!

A few pictures from the parade fun on Saturday! We saw some of the best of our community, from Jackson Hole Fire/EMS ([link removed]) , Teton County Search and Rescue ([link removed]) to our excellent public Transit system, START ([link removed]) bus, with appearances by our highly respected and valued National Park Service ([link removed]) employees, and even Yellowstone to Teton Clean Cities ([link removed]) ’ E-Truck! The future is here!

Political news and events

On Wednesday, July 8th, the hardworking employees of the election clerk’s office, led by Maureen “Mo” Murphy, held a public demonstration and testing of our voting machines. Members of both political parties were present, and all asked pointed questions, that were answered clearly and with patience by the clerk’s office officials. This event, while mandated by the Secretary of State, provides real transparency in terms of understanding how our voting system works. Thank you to Maureen “Mo” Murphy and her election staff.

On Tuesday July 7th, ShelterJh ([link removed]) hosted a great County Commissioner Candidate forum. In front of approximately 60 people, the candidates fielded multiple difficult questions. All candidates were present (except Dr. Brent Blue, due to the tragic loss of life from the accident on Teton Pass). Melchor Moore and Vicky O’Donoghue provided statements. Everyone who participated provided many very serious and competent answers.


Town and Housing news

The Town of Jackson has created a new map showing where you can park if you are visiting the downtown core area. While it is understood that parking during the summer is extremely difficult, there are many options to park and get around, including public transit. In housing news, the Virginian housing discussion will continue, with a special meeting on Tuesday July 14th, at 9 am. You can read the staff report here ([link removed]) . This housing is crucial for our community, and should be discussed thoroughly in order to be as successful as possible. You can attend either in person, or online on Zoom.

In local discussions, the START budget is being heavily impacted by Federal budget cuts, that are also affecting public transit statewide. While no decisions have been made, there may be cuts to our local public transit options. If you are a regular bus user and/or commuter, you may be affected by future decisions. You can read more about this issue here ([link removed]) . Let us, or START ([link removed]) , know how you may be impacted by any potential service cuts. Nothing has been decided yet, however the Town and County are discussing how to best address this issue. Please stay involved as this is a serious community issue.

Park and Forest news

Construction update for the park roads: Still more construction to come! If you are a frequent park user, please follow along Visit Jackson Hole ([link removed]) ’s page and the Grand Teton National Park ([link removed]) ’s page for regular updates.

In addition to road construction, the Delta Lake trail will be rebuilt and maintained this summer, with the help of the Teton Climbers Coalition ([link removed]) and the Access Fund. If you would like to help, there will be a volunteer trail day ([link removed]) on July 25th.

Care about our flowers and local flora? The Jackson Hole Wildlife Foundation will be conducting a weed pull day ([link removed]) on Crystal Lite, at the Nelson Dr. trail, on July 22nd.

Upcoming events

Join Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains (PPRM) for their annual fundraiser, Cocktails for a Cause, an event to celebrate the work of PPRM in the region. The event is Thursday, August 13 from 6 to 8 pm just outside of downtown Jackson. These are challenging times for reproductive health care and bodily autonomy, so please join PPRM”s CEO, Adrienne Mansanares, who will discuss the current landscape of reproductive health and abortion care in Wyoming and the broader region. And come out to connect with like-minded individuals and be in solidarity with their mission to care, no matter what. League of Women Voters Primary Democratic Candidate forum

This Wednesday, July 15th, the League of Women Voters will be hosting a Democratic primary candidate forum at the Teton County Library, from 6 to 8pm. This is an important forum, and a great opportunity to learn more about each candidate. More info here ([link removed]) .
