Texas Values Sues Austin For Abortion Funding With Tax Dollars

This week, Texas Values and local taxpayers filed a lawsuit against the City of Austin for its unlawful use of $250,000 in taxpayer money to support abortion services organizations like Jane’s Due Process, which helps minor girls receive an abortion without parental consent. Prior to the lawsuit, the Austin City Council voted unanimously to pass a radical budget that includes a 67% increase in abortion funding from the previous year. Texas Values has provided testimony to the Austin City Council expressing concern and opposition to these unlawful uses of taxpayer money that support abortion.

The lawsuit alleges that the city’s expenditures are preempted by the state’s abortion laws, which impose criminal liability on anyone who “furnishes the means for procuring an abortion knowing the purpose intended.” The lawsuit also alleges that the city’s expenditures violate the state constitution’s gift clause. Local governments that use taxpayer dollars to aid and abet abortions are committing a criminal act, and they can’t hide behind Roe v. Wade because there’s no constitutional right to taxpayer funding of abortion.

Back to School Rights: What Every Texas Student & Parent Needs to Know

Many schools across Texas continue to head back to school (in person or online) this month, and it’s important for students and parents to know their rights. As a parent, you may be concerned with schools reopening, whether you should homeschool your child, and what your child will be learning in the classroom. As a student, you may be wondering if you can pray, lead a religious club, or even say “Merry Christmas” at school. Texas Values is here as a resource to guide you through the school year and its challenges as it relates to parental rights, schooling options, and curriculum.

Some parents may be concerned that private schools have to follow local or state orders when it comes to opening (or being forced to stay closed) for the fall semester. Parents also need to be aware of radical sex education that the school district may be pushing. In many Texas school districts, radical sex education is being adopted without parental input, or is being hidden from parents. Our policy team has put together an updated, comprehensive resource page to help equip parents and students with all their back-to-school rights.
