Cycles of drought, devastating floods, catastrophic
hurricanes — this is how the climate crisis looks and feels for people in
many places around the world who depend on the land and agriculture for
survival.
Our teams are working around the clock to help people facing disasters,
poverty and hunger, but we need the full support of our entire Mercy Corps
community. That’s why I hope you’ll make a gift to the Matching Gift
Challenge Fund.
Your donation can help inspire others to give as well, and when they do we
can make twice the impact. We’ve set an ambitious goal of $72,000 by
August 31: [ [link removed] ]Make your gift, and help us to make twice the impact through

[ Sarita ]Sarita in Nepal
Sarita plants sugarcane. Mercy Corps helped her rural community in Nepal
grow sugarcane, to hold back flood water along the river, and to cultivate
for income.
When a flood tore through Sarita’s community in the lowlands of Gharelu,
Nepal, it destroyed homes and killed all of the livestock. The indegenous
Tharu community had no choice but to leave their land.
"We lost our pig, ox, chickens, paddy and wheat. That year we did not
have a single grain."
— Sarita
Mercy Corps worked with Sarita and her community so that they could return
to their land without fearing that the river would rise up and sweep away
their homes again.
Our team in Nepal helped plant sugarcane along the riverbank, which holds
back the water when the river rises. They have now regained 40 hectares of
land for farming and the community works together to plant and harvest the
sugarcane and then sell it to a nearby processing plant. Not only has this
eased the community’s worry, but they are investing in their future — they
use the income from selling the sugarcane to invest in shared equipment
and resources — like a tractor they recently bought to make working the
fields easier and more efficient.

Across Nepal, climate change is adding to the severity and frequency of
floods, landslides, fire and drought. For communities like Sarita’s that
rely on agriculture, these crises can wipe out entire livelihoods.
We’ve set an ambitious goal to raise $72,000 by August 31. [ [link removed] ]Give your
gift today, and help us to make 2x the impact for families in 40+
countries. You lead the way as you inspire others to be part of something
bigger.
