This year's $23.6 million in Community Project Funding will support critical infrastructure and public safety projects identified by local leaders across New York's Second Congressional District. "I'm proud to have secured more than $23.6 million in Community Project Funding for Long Island. My job is to fight for our communities and make sure Long Islanders see their federal tax dollars come back home. A significant portion of FY26 funding is going toward the infrastructure that Long Islanders rely on every day. Some projects include expanding sewer systems in Mastic Beach, West Babylon, and West Islip to help improve water quality and protect our waterways, and improving roads in Lindenhurst, Bellport, Islip, and Massapequa Park because safe, reliable roads are essential for residents and local economies. These are practical investments that will benefit Long Island communities for years to come," said Andrew. ANDREW IN THE NEWS New York area lawmakers rally behind longtime head of WTC Health Program In a letter led by Rep. Andrew Garbarino (R-Bayport) and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), more than two dozen lawmakers urge Kennedy to name Dr. John Howard, the administrator of the 9/11 health program, to a new six-year term ahead of the upcoming 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. The request comes after a turbulent year for Howard and the program during President Donald Trump’s second term. Howard, who as director of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health oversees the 9/11 program, was laid off last April as part of the Trump administration’s widespread federal government downsizing, but then reinstated a month later after public outcry and a pressure campaign led by Garbarino and other New York lawmakers. New York lawmakers scored a victory for the program earlier this year, when Garbarino as chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee negotiated a provision in a larger budget package that ensures the World Trade Center Health Program will be fully funded through 2040. Schumer and Gillibrand rallied for the provision’s passage in the Senate. Garbarino and Gillibrand on Thursday emphasized the need for stability at the program now that funding has been secured. "As we approach the 25th anniversary of the attacks, reappointing Dr. Howard will provide the continuity and stability the Program deserves," Garbarino said in a statement. New York Faces Summer Blood Emergency The New York Blood Center has declared an unprecedented summer blood emergency as donations have dropped significantly due to the holiday weekend and extreme heat.
