Email from Louisiana Democrats MAGA wants to wipe out Black representation in Louisiana without getting any more blood on their hands. John, My name is Troy Carter and I proudly represent Louisiana’s 2nd congressional district, the last remaining majority-Black district in the state. And if MAGA has its way, the district I represent will be the last ever majority-Black district in Louisiana. I could very well be Louisiana’s last Black Congressman. By now, you’ve heard about what MAGA did to Black voters in Louisiana. In April, the Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act. Then MAGA declared a state of emergency to cancel our election, tossed out tens of thousands of ballots, and rammed through a brand-new map that erased one of our majority-Black districts — the seat held by my colleague and dear friend Cleo Fields. But that’s not the full story. While they were debating the map that wiped out Cleo's district, MAGA had a second map waiting in the wings — one that went even further. It eliminated my district too. Then Black voters showed up. They flooded the Capitol, furious at being stripped of their representation. And facing that kind of heat, MAGA blinked. And then MAGA pulled a bait and switch. They benched the map that killed my district and passed the one that eliminated Cleo's — and the moment the ink was dry, they sprang the trap: MAGA activists immediately challenged the very map their own legislature had just passed, claiming my district was an "illegal racial gerrymander." It was a setup. They didn’t want to vote to eliminate my seat in the open, so they're trying to get a court to do their dirty work behind closed doors — so MAGA can wipe out Black representation in Louisiana without any more blood on their hands. We’ve been here before. I’m one of five Black people elected to serve in Congress, the fourth since Reconstruction. The first, John Willis Menard, was denied his seat in Congress, challenged by that period’s MAGA movement. I'm not backing down from this fight. But I can't win it alone. Right now, MAGA's lawyers are working to convince a court to do what they were too scared to do in the open: erase my district and silence the Black voters who sent me to Congress. They are betting that we'll be too tired, too distracted, or too broken to fight back. Let’s prove them wrong. That's where you come in, John. We need a surge in support of Democrats from across the nation to help us fight for Louisiana's last majority-Black district. Can I count on you to chip in $50, $25, or even $15 to stand with every Black voter in Louisiana who refuses to let MAGA drag this state back to the Jim Crow era?
