Enhanced burning restrictions will begin for Cook, Lake, and northern St. Louis counties on Sunday, July 12
To help ensure public safety and protect natural resources, burning restrictions will begin on Sunday, July 12 at 8 a.m. for Cook, Lake, and northern St Louis counties.
In the area affected by the restrictions:
* No campfires are allowed for dispersed, remote, backpacking, or backcountry camping on all state-managed, private, and local lands, whether there is a designated fire ring or not.
* On state lands, this means campfires are not allowed in state forests, including state forest campgrounds, state day-use areas, state recreational areas, and backpacking sites in state parks.
* Campfires are allowed only in an established fire ring associated with a state park, home, cabin, permanent campground, or resort.
* No burning of brush or yard waste is allowed. Burning permits will not be issued or activated.
* No fireworks may be ignited on any public or private land outside city limits.
The burning restrictions will remain in effect until terminated by the DNR Commissioner when weather and environmental conditions indicate a reduction in fire danger.
These restrictions are consistent with burning restrictions that are being implemented by the Bois Forte Band of Chippewa and Voyageurs National Park. In addition, the U.S. Forest Service has issued restrictions for all campfires in the Superior National Forest in these counties beginning at 12:01 am on July 12 and the entire Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, which began at 12:01 on July 11.

With little precipitation and above-average temperatures in the extended forecast in northeastern Minnesota, fire danger is likely to remain very high until the area receives significant precipitation.

Do Your Part
Fire prevention is a shared responsibility - over 90% of wildfires are caused by humans. One unintentional spark in these conditions could result in thousands of charred acres and property damage. The public plays a key role in preventing wildfires.
* Check current fire danger conditions at the DNR statewide fire danger and burning restrictions map [ [link removed] ] before you light a match. Conditions can and do change rapidly.
* If you have a campfire in an approved location, please be extra cautious. Campfires should be less than 3 feet tall by 3 feet wide. Always attend your campfire and make sure it is out COLD before you leave. Drown, stir, and repeat until it’s no longer hot.
* Be careful with any equipment or outdoor activities that could produce heat or a spark. Hot exhaust pipes on ATVs, low-hanging trailer chains, and lawn equipment can easily ignite dry grass and shrubs.
* If you spot a wildfire, get to a safe location and call 911. Do not attempt to stop the fire yourself, allow professional firefighters to respond. Wildfires are unpredictable and dangerous.
