With the GOP Senate still dragging their feet on passing the next federal coronavirus relief package, Americans need support. That includes employees with no paid leave coverage that allows them to miss work when sick -- without repercussions. It's long past time for a national paid sick leave policy.

This pandemic has been a wakeup call to how fast germs can spread and how unexpectedly severe an illness can be. It's absolutely critical that those who are sick can take the time they need to seek necessary treatment and recover before returning to work. It's long past time for a national paid sick leave policy.

Even once the pandemic passes, there are still going to be injuries and illnesses that compromise the health and safety of workers and the public. A sick worker is not only potentially contagious, but studies show that productivity and work quality drastically worsen when employees are not feeling well. Injuries need adequate time and rest to heal. It's borderline cruel to force someone to work under these types of conditions. It's long past time for a national paid sick leave policy.

Americans should not have to risk their health or the health of the public just to make ends meet. A national paid sick leave policy would allow these individuals to prioritize health and safety without the added stress of providing for their families. It's long past time.
