Last night, Donald Trump accepted the Republican Party’s nomination for president, wrapping up a convention that completed the GOP’s transformation to the party of Trump, and my opponent proudly joined with his colleagues. We have seen this week that there is only one unifying principle in the modern Republican Party -- fealty to President Trump, no matter what. Let me be clear, this is dangerous.
Just a few weeks ago, the president floated the idea of delaying the November election until people can “safely cast their ballots.” But thankfully, only Congress has the ability granted under the U.S. Constitution to change the date of an election.
Voting by mail IS a safe and secure way for Americans to vote. In fact, it will make it easier for more people to vote -- and shouldn’t that be our goal in this democracy?
Donald Trump knows that if more eligible voters turn in their ballots, his chances of winning reelection get a lot smaller.
That's why he has falsely claimed that voting by mail will make 2020 "the most INACCURATE and FRAUDULENT Election in history" and has been on a mission to mislead and disenfranchise voters.
At a campaign rally, Trump claimed he would win another four years -- and then another four after that. He thinks he can change the rules and bend them to retain his power, but the fact is that we live in a democracy, not a dictatorship.
Thank you for standing with us today.
Best,
Nancy
