Trump just fired the two Democrats on the Election Assistance Commission, the bipartisan board that helps local officials improve the administration of our elections and maintains the federal mail voter registration form.

I’ll explain more below about what this means, but one thing is for certain: This just made the DNC’s lawsuit against Trump even more critical to protecting vote-by-mail.

The Election Assistance Commission has existed for over 20 years. It’s been deliberately bipartisan and a key partner for states administering elections and setting the standards for election equipment. Now, just four months before a pivotal election, it’s unable to carry out key duties.

We don’t know yet what Trump’s next move will be. He may try to appoint loyalists and coerce the Senate to nominate them. He may try to get the Commission's Executive Director to rig the election rules in his favor. Or maybe he’ll leave the Commission vacant to make it harder to run elections, undermining public trust and creating a scapegoat for when Republicans lose.

We’re no strangers to stopping Trump from interfering with elections, in fact, we sued when Trump tried to take over the Federal Election Commission and forced him to back down.

If we stand together, we will make sure that Trump can’t interfere in our midterm elections. No matter what he tries, we’ll be ready.
