Admitted killer wins GOP governor’s nomination in Colorado
Republican primary voters really one-upped the contest for who can pick the
most unpalatable nominee, officially choosing Victor Marx—a lunatic who has
made wild claims about everything from killing people to being a military
hero—as their nominee for governor in Colorado.
Marx was officially declared the winner on Thursday evening, besting state
Sen. Barbara Kirkmeyer by less than half a point 39.86% to 39.40%.
And his victory threatens downballot Republicans in the state, as he is so far
out of step with Colorado voters that it could depress turnout and cost
Republicans seats in the U.S. House, including a toss-up contest in Colorado’s
8th District, as well as a Likely Republican race in Colorado’s 5th District.
Why is Marx so bad for Republicans? Let’s count the ways.
Marx is a pastor of sorts, running a ministry called “All Things Possible”
that claims to “regularly place ourselves in harm’s way to reach and restore
victims of trauma.”
Dubbing himself the “high-risk humanitarian,” Marx claims his organization
has helped save victims of sex trafficking. The Denver Post Editorial Board,
however, says the group’s claims are bullshit, explaining that the “only
tangible program attributed directly to ATP Ministries on its website is
donating 67,000 stuffed animals to children.”

Marx has also made a number of wild, unverifiable claims, including that at
the age of 7 his stepfather forced him to kill a man. He says the trauma of
that incident is what inspired him to get into his “humanitarian” work.
“Yes, I was made to shoot a man who I watched get buried, and that affected
me deeply most of my life,” Marx told Colorado Public Radio in May. “Which is
why I went to 123 visits to a trauma specialist. And I’ve been on Depakote,
Depakine, Prozac, so I’ve been on the medications. But I think I’m living proof
that you can rise above being a victim and be victorious.”
During the primary, Marx was asked if that was the only person he had ever
killed, and Marx refused to answer.
“WelI would say as a child, yes, without question. But I’ve been in other
situations where possibly people or persons died as a result of me defending
myself,” Marx told local reporter Kyle Clark.
When Clark specifically asked “do you think that you’ve killed other people as
an adult?” to which Marx answered, “Does it matter?”
Uh … what?? Totally normal stuff!
Marx also says he performs exorcisms.
“Like Jesus did, we ask what their name is, and then we give them commands,
and they very frequently and typically will answer through the person’s mind
they will tell us what they hear, and then we destroy them, banish them to
perfect judgement from Christ,” Marx told Clark in the same interview.
Marx performs many of these scam… I mean “exorcisms” by phone, saying that
they are just as effective as in-person exorcisms.
“We send them to the footstool of Jesus Christ, who we believe is sitting at
the right hand of the father, who then absolutely gives them perfect judgement
of what happens,” Marx told Clark in the interview.
Marx will now face off with Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser, who won
the Democratic primary on June 30 when he bested Democratic Sen. Michael Bennet.
Kirkmeyer, who narrowly lost to Marx, conceded the race but refused to endorse
Marx in November, saying in a statement only that “the voters will make the
final decision in November,” and that she hopes “they choose the path that is
best for Colorado.”
She added “and, for the record, I still haven’t killed anyone.”
And that, my friends, is why this race is rated a Safe Democratic contest.
