John:

The House and Senate are in recess this week.

Realistically, there are 12 legislative days left between now and Election Day. This calculation removes the fly-in days, which are usually the first day of the in-session week with only one vote, and the fly-out days later in the week, due to their relative insignificance in the work week.

The first work day in the House work week is usually reserved for “non-controversial” pieces of legislation that will receive over a two-thirds vote in the House.

The short schedule is putting quite the squeeze on what Washington views as “must pass” pieces of legislation.

Matters did not get much easier last week when the House went into recess early after House leadership cancelled ([link removed]) votes over an impasse related to the SAVE America Act.

A third reconciliation bill, appropriations legislation, the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), a Department of War supplemental, FISA, and a couple of other major pieces of legislation remain on the docket.

Many conservatives think the SAVE America Act should also be on that list. Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna has said ([link removed]) that she will try to attach the SAVE America Act to any major piece of legislation that the House is considering.

Senators John Thune and John Cornyn have been pushing back on any attempt in the Senate to pass it.

In response to a post on X from Sen. Mike Lee about the urgent need to pass the SAVE America Act, Senator Cornyn posted, “Show us the votes!”

Sean Davis, CEO and co-founder of the Federalist, reminded ([link removed]) Senator Cornyn that there has already been a Senate vote in the form of an amendment. “The SAVE America Act got 50 votes in the Senate on June 5, 2026. So the votes were there, as you well know.”

It will be interesting to watch how this unfolds as the items that Washington wants to get done stack up against the resolve of the conservatives trying to get the SAVE America Act across the finish line.
